The Gauteng Youth Choir was founded in 2001 by Hannelize du Plessis who also conducts the well known choirs of two prestigious Pretoria secondary schools, Afrikaans Hoër Meisieskool and Afrikaans Hoër Seunskool. In 2003 she and the choir recorded Gioachino Rossini’s Stabat Mater in the Pretoria City Hall. Tinus Kühn took over from Hannelize in 2004 and conducted the choir until 2008 when he resigned. In December 2004 the choir took part in the 14th International Advent and Christmas Music Festival in Prague and was hosted by the Ondrasek Youth Choir of Novy Jicin, Moravia with whom they shared concerts in various towns in the Czech Republic. After Tinus Kühn resigned Waldo van der Merwe took over the reins on a temporary basis. Gerhard Pienaar became the conductor in 2009 after singing in the choir for a year and in various other choirs of exceptional standards for several years in various other choirs of exceptional standards. He completed his Piano Unisa grade 8 in 1999 and theory grade 6 in 1998.
